The Common Backswimmer (Notonecta glauca) is widespread in the United Kingdom (where they are also known as Greater Water Boatmen) and Europe. Another species is N. maculata, distinguished by mottled brick-coloured forewings.
It the most widespread and abundant of the four British notonectids.
