This species is similar to the larger Water Boatman (Notonecta glauca), but not only is this species smaller than the Water Boatman, but also it swims the "correct" way up (The Water Boatman swims upside down). Called a water boatman because of it's large "paddles" this species is common in ponds and lakes throughout Britain, and will fly during warm weather. There are several other species of Lesser Water Boatman, but they have different wing cases.
