English Elm (Ulmus procera) was once a common tree of the British countryside, until the outbreak of Dutch Elm Disease (DED), which killed millions of Elms. English Elm rarely produces fertile seed, and reproduces by suckers, so all English Elms are genetically identical, making it hard for populations to recover after a DED outbreak.
