Standard Goldfish

Brown goldfish

The Goldfish (Carissus auratus), was orignally brought over from China in the 17th century, it was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated. These fish are small members of the Carp Family. They are said to have strong learning abilities and vision that enables them to be able to distinguish humans.

The Western form, or wild "brown goldfish" is often sold to unwary fishery managers and angling club committees as "Crucian carp" (which see for details of differences). Goldfish x crucian hybrids are also common currency in the dark world of commercial hatcheries. There are various forms obtained by selective breeding
