widespread in Britain, inhabiting a range of habitats, and Alcis repandata sodorensium, which is restricted to the Outer Hebrides. The wings of this species are extremly variable, ranging from the common grey-brown with various markings, to very pale or very dark examples. Some forms have a dark band, but most just have a series of crosslines.
